Chair-Spotting: The Winter Olympics

Hi. This is Jody from Ideas, Notions & Boats Made of Ocean. Becca's asked me to do some guest posts for her blog, basically chronicling the appearances of some classic/interesting chairs in pop culture/every day life...

So the winter Olympics have to come to an end, with a rush of Gold for the home team, and a defeat over the USA in the Gold medal game in men's hockey. While it might be easy to get caught up in the spectacle and the wonderment, or to get distracted by the super-human performances of the athletes from all countries, I think it's important to take just a moment and reflect on what was truly important about the Games: The chairs.

Becca and I couldn't help but notice how stately all of the statespeople looked sitting up in their statebox at the opening ceremony, and then we noticed: They're all sitting in the wonderful and much copied Panton chair in bright, wintery white... look:

And here's one in the background while Sarah McLachlan sings serenely:

(It turns out the orchestra were sitting on the Panton, too.)

But that's not it: On CTV they had an interview set where they, well, interviewed athletes and dignitaries daily to get the inside scoop, and lo and behold, the chairs they chose for the set were the classic Barcelona chairs:

If the rest of the world takes nothing from these games about who we are as a people, let's hope that at the very least they see that we know a good piece of furniture when we sit on one.

  1. heeeey chairsitters. this blog has already expanded to televised chairlooking, not simply chairsitting as implied by the blogtitle.
