Chair-Spotting: Public Storage commercial

Becca and I were watching some TV this morning and, in the middle of a commercial for Public Storage, I noticed a George Nelson Marshmallow Chair:

(The Nelson is the red sofa to the right, made up of 18 circular pads.)

Here's the actual commercial; pay attention at 16 seconds:

I feel that it's unlikely they used an authentic Nelson sofa -they retail for between three and five thousand new, and up to four times that for vintage- so here's the real thing:

Eco-Friendly Design

A design and manufacturing style that focuses on the sustainability of not just the materials, but also the product; the idea being that a well-built $1,000 chair is less likely to end up in landfill than a $40 chair. (Likely, there are very few Knoll Barcelona chairs in dumps...) Eco-Friendly furniture often highlights the material used instead of hiding it; for example, Frank Gehry's Wiggle chair is very obviously made from cardboard, and barn board -a favorite material in the Eco-Friendly furniture industry- is used because of it's age and inherent beauty.

Fake

For our purposes, a fake is a replica without heart-poorly constructed or with no attempt to disguise the differences. The cushion of a real Barcelona chair is made of many pieces of leather which is hand sewn together. A fake uses only one piece and creates a weak illusion of detail using buttons.

Fully Licensed Model

An authentic design, manufactured by the company who holds the license to the original products. For example, Herman Miller for most of the Eames' creations.

Mid Century Modern
A design style that emerged in the mid 20^th century characterized by clean simple lines with a focus on natural wood and its grain. The style is boxy and minimalist, but I find it very comfortable.

Modernist

Sleek and functional style designed to suggest industrial production. Often the furniture is seen as cold or impersonal, due to the lines and materials used in the fabrication.

Reproduction

An homage to the original piece, a reproduction takes into account all of the minute details that make the chair special. The Plycraft Eames copy is so well made and was created with such attention to detail, that many consider it superior to its inspiration (Charles and Ray, we still love you best).
